Why Fluids Are Important To Your Car

Michael Leech • April 20, 2023

Why should I get my fluids checked?

Most people only know about three fluids their car needs: Gasoline, Wiper Fluid, and Engine Oil, and they think about them in that order! Your car is a complex machine that requires regular maintenance to perform optimally. One of them most important aspects of maintaining your car is keeping its fluids clean and at the right levels. In fact, having the fluids in your car checked regularly can help you avoid expensive repairs and prolong the life of your vehicle. Here are some reasons why it is important to have the fluids checked in your car:

  1. Lubrication : Cars have many moving parts that require lubrication to function smoothly. Oil is the most important fluid in your car because it lubricates the engine and its components, reducing friction and wear. When the oil level is low, the engine will not receive the proper lubrication it needs, and its components will rub together, causing damage and overheating. By having the oil level and quality checked regularly, you can prevent costly engine repairs or replacement. Here’s a great article by AAA on oil changes.
  2. Cooling : Your car’s engine generates a lot of heat, and if it becomes too hot, it can cause serious damage. Coolant (or Antifreeze) is the fluid that helps regulate your engine’s temperature by circulating through the engine and radiator. If the coolant level is low or the mixture is incorrect, your engine may overheat, which can result in warped or cracked heads, blown gaskets, or a seized engine. A regular check of the coolant level and quality can prevent these issues from occurring.
  3. Transmission : The transmission is the component in your car that transfers power from the engine to the wheels. Transmission fluid helps keep the transmission’s gears and bearings lubricated and cool. If the transmission fluid level is low or dirty, it can cause the transmission to overheat, slip, or fail. Regular checks of the transmission fluid can prevent these issues and help prolong the life of your transmission. Automatic transmission fluid is often very specialized in modern cars, with specific non-conductive properties and thermal characteristics to allow it to both lubricate and cool the transmission while also being the hydraulic fluid that does the “work” of shifting gears. The viscosity (thickness) and the non-conductivity of the fluid can be compromised by water intrusion from repeated condensation, by contamination of the fluid by internal clutch wear, and by age. It is very important to service your transmission fluid regularly.
  4. Brake System : The brake system is responsible for slowing down and stopping your car. Brake fluid is the fluid that allows the brakes to function properly by transmitting the force of the brake pedal to the brake calipers. If the brake fluid level is low or contaminated, it can reduce braking performance, making it difficult to stop the car quickly. Regular checks of the brake fluid level and quality can ensure that your brakes are working properly and prevent accidents. Brake fluid by nature is hygroscopic, which means it will absorb water out of the air. This means it is important to keep the master cylinder cap on at all times and to always only add fresh fluid from a sealed container.
  5. Power Steering : Power steering fluid is used to help you turn the steering wheel more easily. If the power steering fluid level is low or the fluid is contaminated, it can cause the steering to become stiff or difficult to turn. Regular checks of the power steering fluid can prevent these issues and ensure that you can steer your car safely and comfortably.

In conclusion, having the fluids in your car checked regularly is essential to keeping your vehicle running smoothly and avoiding expensive repairs. By keeping the oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid at the proper levels and quality, you can prevent damage to your engine, transmission, brakes, and steering system. Make sure to follow your car manufacturer’s recommendations for fluid checks and changes, and to consult with a trusted and competent mechanic if you suspect any issues. Taking care of your car’s fluids will not only save you money in the long run, but also ensure your safety and comfort on the road. To schedule an appointment click here for our link!
